Magnolia Mound Plantation Offers Beginners Blacksmith Class
Learn the historic art of blacksmithing from local blacksmith Steven Kennedy on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m.-noon at Magnolia Mound Plantation. Kennedy, a master blacksmith who works in Baton Rouge, is regionally known for his high quality work in replicating historic hardware and his more modern artistic and functional pieces.
Students will learn about the materials, methods and safety procedures used to create long-lasting handmade metal objects. During this three-hour long class, Kennedy will teach safety, technical definitions and tools of the trade, techniques in cutting, heating, forming and finishing an item.
Students then will create their own piece, an S-hook, to bring home. The instructor will supply all items needed for the class including protective gear. Also, the class will be hands-on with plenty of time to work with the instructor on an individual basis. Classes in advanced techniques may be added if interest is shown.
Students must be 16 years old, with parental consent, or older to attend the class. Registration is $40 per student with a maximum number of four and a minimum number of two students in attendance. The last day to register is Monday, Oct. 5.
