Walk with a Doc

Through a partnership with Capital Area Medical Society (CAMS) and the Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS), BREC brought this national program to Louisiana. This program is an organized effort to bring the benefits of regular exercise, healthy nutrition and medical information to the general population. Each free, local walk is hosted by a physician at a BREC park or facility.

5-2-1-0+10

5-2-1-0+10 is a national childhood obesity prevention campaign affiliated with First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” Initiative. This program was adopted by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System through its Wellness Policy. 5-2-1-0+10 stands for 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day, 2 hours or less of recreational screen time per day, 1 hour of physical activity per day, 0 sweetened or sugary drinks, and 10 hours of sleep every night for children. At BREC, we conduct 500 parent education sessions throughout the parish to train parents how to enhance academic performance and behavior.

BREC on the Geaux

To combat “play deserts” and help in the fight against childhood obesity, we created a mobile playground program serving primarily low-income areas. During the school year, our 2 BREC on the Geaux trucks visit 9 different elementary schools each week to provide a fun and unique recess. After school, the trucks travel to communities around the parish for children not attending after-school programs.
