Louisiana Senate Proclaims Support for Parks and Recreation

Month of celebration to highlight value of parks and recreation in East Baton Rouge Parish

Louisiana Senate President Pro Tempore Sharon Weston Broome presented a proclamation at the BREC June Commission meeting declaring July Recreation and Parks month for the state.

Across the nation, parks and recreation agencies spend the month of July encouraging individuals and families to visit their local parks in order to inspire healthy, active lifestyles and activities. In East Baton Rouge Parish, BREC has posted a full calendar of activities on our website at During the month BREC is inviting visitors to our facilities to tell us what they love best about their park system on cards which will be displayed at each recreation center. BREC is also asking visitors to post pictures of themselves at their favorite par k or special facility on BREC’s social media pages using the hash tag #ParkRecLuv and participate in a video which will be posted to those pages.

The video will be shot at BREC’s Liberty Lagoon on Saturday, July 20 as the public is invited to participate in a special after-hours celebration at the water park from 7-10 p.m. Admission will be reduced to $5.00 per person and in addition to the lazy river, splash pad and water slides, BREC will also offer a movie on the lawn, casting contests, float races, lily pad races, sand volleyball, pool ping-pong and a dunking chair. Limited concessions will be offered and wristbands will be pre-sold at Liberty Lagoon during normal operating hours which are 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

"July is the last full month that families can get out and enjoy their parks systems before school is back in session and we hope people across East Baton Parish will not only take the time to explore their parks and all of the great special facilities that BREC offers but to tell us why they love their parks," said BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight. "We know our facilities and programs play a critical role in the health, safety and quality of life for our parish and we think it is important to take the time to celebrate with the community that has worked with us since the creation of the 2004 Imagine Your Parks strategic plan to completely transform the parks and recreation system in East Baton Rouge Parish."
