Construction Starts On Downtown Greenway at BREC’s Expressway Park

BREC and DDD Partner to Enhance Downtown Park

Construction has begun on the Downtown Greenway at BREC’s Expressway Park, 935 South 11th St.  This collaborative project between the Downtown Development District and BREC was made possible by the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program for Louisiana administered by the Office of State Parks - Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism.  The project includes approximately 700 linear feet of new pedestrian and cyclist trail construction connecting Myrtle Avenue to South Boulevard at East Boulevard. In addition to the pathway, trailhead facilities will be created providing bike racks, accessible ramps and connections to the pathway from two parking lots.  Construction is being completed by ANR Construction, LLC.  This portion of the Downtown Greenway is expected to be completed in early fall, and will be celebrated with an official ribbon cutting event.

BREC recently completed renovations to the Expressway Park Recreation Center in preparation for summer programs. The renovations include restroom improvements, enhancements to the meeting and activity rooms, installation of new windows, painting of the interior, and expansion of the lobby space of the facility.

The renovations made at Expressway mark the latest phase of park improvements made by BREC as part of the 2004 Imagine Your Parks program. The addition of the Downtown Greenway space will enhance the offerings of the park even more.
