BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center Hosts Rockin’ at the Swamp

Explore the exciting world of rocks, minerals, gemstones and fossils!

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center (BSNC) will host its seventh annual Rockin' at the Swamp event Saturday, March 19 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at BSNC, 10503 N. Oak Hills Parkway.

This rockin' event provides visitors the opportunity to explore the vast world of geology, and includes activities and displays about rocks, gemstones, minerals, and fossils. In addition to hobbyists featuring hands-on exhibits, vendors in the Rockhound Market will be selling gemstone jewelry, rough and polished mineral specimens, fossils and more.

Other thematic elements include "Gold" Mine, Treasure Trail, stone crafts, rock-climbing wall, fossil quarry, a rock tumbler jump house and event souvenir buckets. At the "Gold" Mine people can hunt the perfect pyrite specimens for their collection. At the day's end, children, ages 12 and younger, will enjoy the Kids' Gold Rush, which will allow younger children to go for the gold and clean out the mine.

Along the Treasure Trail, experienced fossil hunters and beginner rock hounds alike will take to the trails to hunt for stations where they will collect specimens for their own gemstone identification cards.

Children and adults can use their creative talents to produce one-of-a-kind pet rocks at the stone craft corner. These colorful stone snakes and turtles come to life with vivid shades and patterns created by visitors.

Everyone can climb to new heights by taking a turn on our giant rock-climbing wall and rock-hounds of all ages can dig right in and get their hands dirty in the fossil quarry while hunting for fossil crinoids, shells and shark teeth!

Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for children, ages 3-17; $2 for BSNC pass holders; and free for children ages 2 and under.

This event is sponsored by ExxonMobil, 96.1 The River (iHeartRadio), La Capitol Federal Credit Union, Parrot Head Club of Baton Rouge and the BREC Foundation.
